In June (12 - 17), a group of us from Australia***—Associates, Sisters, and even an excited family of seven—embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Rome for the International Associates of the Holy Family Conference, celebrating 150 years of the congregation’s loving service. Go to our Website to read the story of their experience in the Eternal city.
The impact of these days together in the Eternal City is still resonating in our hearts and homes. Here’s a glimpse into our extraordinary journey, through the eyes of both adults and children! Places and experiences which impacted us immensely.
Sacred Spaces and Profound Encounters
From the moment we arrived at the beautiful residence of the Sisters of the Holy Family in Via Nazareth, we knew we were somewhere special. Praying in the Holy Family Chapel—where the relics of Blessed Frances Siedliska rest—alongside Sisters and Associates from all corners of the globe, felt like a taste of heaven. The air was filled with joy, reverence, and unity as we celebrated Mass together, shared challenges and aspirations, and marveled at the diversity and strength of our worldwide family.
One unforgettable privilege was visiting Rome’s four major Basilicas, passing through the Holy Doors during this Jubilee Year, and receiving a special Indulgence—spiritual milestones that will stay with us forever. And, of course, witnessing Pope Leo XIV at the Papal Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica was a highlight none of us will ever forget!

Walking in the Footsteps of the Foundress
A deeply moving part of our journey was visiting the Mother House on Via Machiavelli, where Mother Foundress lived and died. Standing in her chapel, seeing her handwritten letters and personal belongings, we felt a real connection to her spirit and the congregation’s roots. It was as if her presence still guided and inspired us.
A Global Family United
Our conference theme, “Love went out of Nazareth – to the whole world,” truly came alive as groups from places like Warsaw, Belarus, Krakow, France, the Philippines, the USA, and Australia shared their stories. It was a powerful reminder: even if our local groups feel small, we’re each an essential thread in a global tapestry of prayer, service, and hope.
We discussed practical ways to strengthen our communities—like inviting more families and grandparents, hosting retreats, and reaching out through flyers and parish talks. Yes, there are challenges: busy lives, competing commitments, and the struggle to keep families at the heart of Church life. But together, inspired by the Sisters’ generosity, serenity, and infectious joy, we left Rome renewed and ready to keep building up our mission.

Family Reflections: The Doulas’ Story
For the Doulas family, this was their very first overseas adventure—imagine the excitement of five daughters preparing for such an event! Two months later, they still describe the experience as “surreal.” Tess and Stephen, the parents, were deeply moved by the sisters’ love, the conference’s profound theme, and the realisation that, just like the Holy Family, every family can radiate love to the world.

Their daughters’ highlights say it all:
Ava: “Walking through the Holy Doors at St. Peter’s, seeing Pope Leo, and playing music with the Sisters was so exciting!”
Anastasia: “Eating yummy food with the Sisters and having a big water fight—watching the Sisters dance was hilarious!”
Isla: “Meeting new friends, playing soccer, and doing activities with the Sisters was so much fun.”
Grace: “Spending time in the chapel, playing music beside Blessed Frances Siedliska’s relics, was so special.”
Sophia: “Living with the Sisters, sharing their joy and generosity, and attending daily Mass and adoration made me feel uplifted and inspired.”
Bringing it Home
Returning to Australia, we carry forward a renewed enthusiasm—grateful for the friendships formed, the spiritual growth experienced, and the living example of the Sisters’ love. Our hearts are set on strengthening our Associate group, reaching out to more families, and living out the charism of the Holy Family: love, simplicity, and fidelity.
As we continue our journey, we remember that, just as love went out from Nazareth to the whole world, so too can our own small acts of service ripple out in ways we may never see. Thank you to the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth for making this extraordinary experience possible.
Here’s to the next 150 years—may we continue to be Pilgrims of Hope, spreading love from our families to the wider world! ***This combined reflection was created based on Maria De Carlo and Doulas Family.
