Where the Towers Touched the Heart

I stood where the towers once reached heaven,

where steel and glass had kissed the sky,

and now two waters held their silence,

like tears that never learned to dry.

I walked beside those solemn waters,

and read the names—one after one—

thousands of lives, thousands of stories,

thousands of stars beneath the sun.

My eyes moved slowly through the letters,

searching faces I had never known,

yet somehow every name felt sacred,

as though I was not standing there alone.

A Tuesday changed the course of history,

a morning shattered into flame,

and ordinary lives became remembered

by the world that called each person’s name.

There were mothers, fathers, sons and daughters,

friends and strangers, young and old;

dreams interrupted without warning,

hands that reached for hands to hold.

And standing there, I felt a presence—

not of sorrow only, but of grace;

a quiet whisper in the stillness,

a sacred warmth within that place.

For beneath the names and flowing water,

beneath the grief the years have known,

I felt that love had not departed—

that no beloved soul is truly gone.

The towers were no longer standing,

yet something taller filled the air:

a spirit born from lives remembered,

a light that grief could not impair.

I closed my eyes beside the memorial

and listened beyond the sound of tears.

For a moment, time seemed suspended,

and eternity felt strangely near.

I thought of all those souls together,

not as numbers carved in stone,

but as laughter, love, and memories—

each one a universe of their own.

And then I understood the silence:

sometimes Heaven speaks without a word.

Sometimes the deepest prayers are whispered

in places where the heart has heard.

I came to mourn the lives they carried,

but left with something I can't explain—

a sacred sense that love survives us,

that light can rise from deepest pain.

The towers may have touched the heavens,

but that day they touched our hearts;

and though their shadows changed the skyline,

their memory never shall depart.

So I stand beneath the open heavens,

where their names forever flow,

and offer one small prayer of remembrance

for every soul we came to know.

May they rest beyond all sorrow.

May their families feel their light.

May love outlive the darkest morning,

and turn remembrance into light.

For towers can fall, and years can pass,

and wounds can slowly learn to heal—

but every name beside those waters

reminds us what it means to feel.

And there, where silence holds their stories,

I sensed a truth both deep and true:

The towers touched the heart that morning—

and the hearts they touched still reach

the sky. Sr Rita Apura csfn
