On Saturday, 31 May 2025, the Good Shepherd Parish in Plumpton came alive with joy, reverence, and gratitude as parishioners, clergy, and religious sisters gathered to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.

The celebration began with a word of welcome from Sr Margaret Kozub, provincial leader and a moving history video presentation (prepared by Anthony Costa from Ministry Media).

Pictures told the story of the lives and mission of the Sisters over the past 150 years with the particular focus on over 70 years of presence of the Sisters in Australia. For many parishioners, it was a chance to connect more personally with the Sisters—some of whom they recognised only by face—and to learn about the congregation’s rich history and contributions.

The Eucharist, led by Fr. Gerard O’Dempsey (parish priest), Fr. John, and Fr. Paul (assistant priests), was enriched by the voices of the combined vibrant Filipino choirs. The liturgy was simple and beautiful, highlighting the engagement of the Sisters who are part of the local parish. The presence of Sisters from nearby convents was welcomed by all who had the rare occasion to see many sisters at one time.

Guests and parishioners alike were touched by the warm hospitality and the spirit of welcome that was evident that night. One guest, who had worked with the Sisters for nearly 25 years, expressed deep pride in their achievements and was especially moved by the historical display showcasing the congregation’s journey.

The celebration was also a time of personal reflection and gratitude. For one Sister, it was a moment to give thanks for being alive during this Jubilee year—a time marked by personal, congregational, and ecclesial milestones. Another Sister shared how the preparation for the event - coordinating volunteers, organising food and freebies,- was a joyful experience that revealed the generous spirit of the parish community.

A particularly touching moment came when each Sister in the Plumpton community received a rose and a thoughtful gift from a parish couple, accompanied by a heartfelt message of gratitude and blessings. Parishioners also took it upon themselves to serve refreshments and distribute gifts which Sisters prepared, allowing the Sisters to fully engage with the community. The display of the history of the Congregation, available in the meeting room, sparked many interesting conversations.

The evening concluded with a powerful commissioning: “Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” It was a fitting send-off for a community that had come together not just to celebrate a milestone, but to honour a legacy of love, service, and faith.

As one of the sisters beautifully summarised, “The thing that struck me the most was how people came together… it wasn’t a chore, it was joy.” The 150th Jubilee celebration was not only a tribute to the past but a hopeful embrace of the future, rooted in gratitude and community.
